SpyBot Search and Destroy
Spybot
Search and Destroy is the is the second program in my toolbox.
It can clean and also immunize your system. As with all of the programs
I mention, it will remove or immunize for things that another program
may miss. SpyBot S&D can be found here.
I have
searched the site and program looking for restrictions to the
license and actually I have not found any as far as who can use free
or pays a fee. They have a general public license and it looks like
there are no fees for any one. But remember if you like the program,
always consider making a donation to help keep it free. You can make
donations here.
When using
this program on a new system or clean install, it is the
second program I install. If Internet access is available at the time
you install it, go ahead and update the program after opening it. If
not, it can be updated later.
Brief
installation and usage instructions from the website.When
opening SpyBot S&D for the
first time on a new system or clean install, you only need to use the
immunize feature. Click on the immunize button on the left of the
window. The program will automatically check for items already
blocked and let you know if any further immunization is needed. If it
says that you need to immunize, all you need to do is click the
green plus sign at the top of the page. Also look at the bottom of this
page and you can also enable permanent blocking of bad addresses
in Internet Explorer.
If you are
cleaning a system, this is one of the first programs I
install.
After installing, run the program. At the opening screen, click on the
button "Check for Problems". Allow the scanner to run and remove all
items it finds.
Now Go to
the Immunize screen and let it check to see if there is
anything else it can immunize against. If there is then click the
"Immunize" button at the top so it can protect against the extra items.
Also you can enable permanent blocking of bad addresses in Internet
Explorer by putting a check mark next to it at the bottom of the page.
The above
instructions will enable the basic protection that SpyBot S&D has and will help to keep your
system clean. But there are many more settings and tools that are
available within the program. If you look on the left side of SpyBot's
opening screen, you will see 4 grey tabs - SpyBot S&D, Settings, Tools, and Info and License.
There are
to many settings and tools for me to attempt to try and list
here. I suggest exploring (as I do) and trying out some of them.
Be sure to make only one change at a time until you learn what they can
